The Kerala Health Department has issued a health alert across three northern districts — Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad following the detection of two suspected cases of Nipah virus infection, triggering concerns of a potential outbreak.
The suspected infections were identified in individuals from Malappuram and Palakkad districts during preliminary testing at government medical institutions in Kozhikode and Malappuram. According to the Health Department, early test results have returned positive for Nipah virus. The samples have been forwarded to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for confirmation.
In an official statement, the department said it has instructed district authorities to implement immediate containment and control actions based on the State’s Nipah virus protocol, even before receiving final confirmation from NIV.
To assess the gravity of the situation and coordinate the containment response, Health Minister Veena George chaired a high-level emergency meeting. “We have already strengthened preventive measures in line with Nipah protocol,” the Minister stated following the meeting.
Specialised 26-member rapid response teams have been deployed in all three districts to undertake contact tracing, public communication, and symptom monitoring. The teams will also conduct door-to-door surveillance to prevent the virus from spreading undetected.
Police authorities have been roped in to aid in the compilation of contact lists of those who may have come into close proximity with the suspected patients. In both Palakkad and Malappuram, containment zones are set to be established, with District Collectors instructed to spearhead necessary preventive actions.
Officials have been directed to issue regular public announcements and ensure thorough contact tracing efforts so that no potential exposure is overlooked. Additionally, the Minister emphasized that “officials are also being urged to check if any unnatural or unexplained deaths have occurred in recent weeks – one of the key warning signs of a potential outbreak.”
Helplines at both the state and district levels are being activated to provide public assistance and guidance. The Health Minister will convene another top-level meeting later on Friday to evaluate the evolving situation and strengthen the containment strategy further.
As Kerala, which has previously faced deadly Nipah outbreaks, braces for any escalation, health officials remain on high alert to contain the virus at the earliest stage.
