NIRF Ranking 2024: IIT-Madras leads overall; IISc, JNU, and Jamia Millia top universities in India

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has topped the universities category, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia, both in New Delhi, securing the second and third positions respectively as the Ministry of Education announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings today.

In the universities category, the fourth position is held by Manipal Academy of Higher Education, followed by Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in fifth. The University of Delhi is in sixth place, while Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, and Aligarh Muslim University occupy the seventh and eighth spots respectively. Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, round out the top ten.

In the overall category, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras leads the rankings, followed by IISc Bengaluru in second place and IIT Bombay in third. IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur hold the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions respectively. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, is ranked seventh, with IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati in eighth and ninth. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, completes the top ten.

IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past eight years. In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta are among the top five.

Anna University, Chennai, has been placed at the top position among state public universities, a new category introduced in this ninth edition of the rankings.

AIIMS New Delhi continues to be recognized as the best medical college in India, retaining its position from previous years.

In the colleges category, Hindu College, Delhi, is ranked first, with Miranda House in the second position.

The ninth edition of the rankings also introduced three new categories: ‘Open Universities,’ ‘Skill Universities,’ and ‘State Funded Government Universities.’
