Violence against Muslims in India is a fallacy: Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday defended India’s treatment of Muslims reasoning it by Muslim population growth. Sitharaman said that India has the second-largest Muslim population in the world and is only growing in numbers.

The Finance Minister was attending a virtual panel discussion organised by the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIE). Adam S. Posen, the president of the PIIE, questioned her about the reports that MPs from the opposing party had lost their status and the alleged victimisation of Muslim minorities in India.

Disputing those reports, The FM urged foreign investors to visit India and see the development rather than relying on “Western media”

“So across the board in India, if violence is happening to make Muslims get affected, itself is a fallacy as a statement. To say it’s all the blame of the Government of India, I would want to say then, tell me, between 2014 and today, has the population dwindled? Have the deaths been disproportionately high in any one particular community? So, I would rather invite those who write these reports to come to India. I host them. Let them come to India and prove their point,” she said.

She swiftly used the platform to attack Pakistan, calling out the neighbourhood rivals on their treatment of minorities.

Muslims in India are doing better than those in Pakistan, she asserted.
