Ban opinion polls immediately: Samajwadi Party to ECI

Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Polls, Samajwadi Party on Sunday wrote to the Election Commission of India seeking an “immediate” ban on opinion polls run by several television news channels.

Party state president, Naresh Uttam Patel in a letter claimed that opinion polls are “misleading the voters and the elections are getting affected.”

“Ban, with immediate effect, the opinion polls being run on television news channels,” reads the letter shared on social media.

A copy of the letter is sent to the UP Chief Electoral Officer as well.

“…it is also an open violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for elections…So for free, fair, fearless polls, it is necessary to ban opinion polls on television news channels with an immediate effect,” states the letter.

The state is going to have polls in seven phases for which the last date of polling is on March 7 and counting of votes will be held on March 10.

Many TV channels, who are accused of colluding with ruling BJP-government, have weighed that BJP will be re-elected in this election.

Recently, Zee News’s Opinion Poll predicted that BJP has an edge in the elections. Several television news channels are running opinion polls
