Sadaf Jafar, tortured by UP police for CAA protest, named Congress candidate

Anti-CAA protester and national coordinator of All India Mahila Congress, Sadaf Jafar, is on the first list of 125 candidates Congress announced on Thursday for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election.

Jafar will contest from Lucknow Central, one of the key constituencies in this election. She was allegedly tortured by Lucknow police during her detention on 19 December 2019 and jailed for 19 days.

She was “kicked in the stomach by a male cop” after being arrested.

At the time of arrest, Jafar was streaming a Facebook Live video, and asking the police to arrest the stone-pelters. But she was jailed and charged with 18 serious offences, including inciting violence and damaging public property.

Jafar was the only woman arrested, along with 150 others including former IPS officer S.R. Darapuri.

“Out of the total 125 candidates, 40 per cent are women and 40 per cent are the youth. With this historic initiative, we hope to bring in a new kind of politics in the state,” Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said while making the announcement.

Jafar has become a close aide of Priyanka Gandhi, who is leading the century-old party in Uttar Pradesh. UP will vote over seven phases beginning February 10, with votes to be counted on March 10.
