Following the militant attack that killed 26 people in Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, security forces launched a large-scale crackdown in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, detaining hundreds of individuals for questioning.
According to reports, more than 1,500 ‘overground workers’, individuals with militant records, and those with FIRs registered against them have been taken in for questioning.
Security measures have been beefed up in the region, with tens of thousands of police personnel and soldiers deployed.
A joint combing operation involving the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police is currently underway.
Meanwhile, the Anantnag Police have announced a reward of ₹20 lakh for any information that leads to the capture of the militants involved in the attack.
A militant group, The Resistance Front (TRF), claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack, citing opposition to perceived demographic changes in Jammu and Kashmir as a primary reason for the attack.
TRF emerged online in 2019 in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 and swiftly evolved into a full-fledged militant organisation.
In January 2023, it was officially designated as a terrorist group under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
