People are still unhappy with BJP, say farmer bodies after poll announcement

As the Election Commission on Saturday announced dates for Assembly polls in five states, farmer leaders said that people are unhappy with the BJP and it will play a decisive role in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh elections.

“Our main demands to give us a legal guarantee on minimum support price and expel Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni from the Cabinet are still not fulfilled,” PTI news agency quotes Abhimanyu Singh Kohar, a member of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha as saying.

Following the draconian farm laws were withdrawn in Parliament on 29 November and in a proposal, Union government assured action on pending demands of MSP and removal of Union minister Ajay Mishra, the umbrella body of farmer unions had called off the historic year-long agitation.

Kohar said that the Samyukta Kisan Morcha will meet on 15 January to discuss these issues and will chalk out a future course of action.

Kohar also told PTI news agency that the demands were still pending and the BJP government would not be able to take major decisions as the Model Code of Conduct came into effect after the Election Commission announced the election dates.

During the last meeting with farmer bodies, the Union had proposed a panel to decide on the ways in which minimum support price for crops could be assuredly provided.

“Minimum support price is another big issue which has an effect across states. It will certainly have an impact during the polls in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab,” Saurabh Upadhyay, spokesperson of farmer body Bharatiya Kisan Union said.
