“Points Akhil Gogoi has said aligns with what BJP is saying”: AIUDF

Hours after Akhil Gogoi, the jailed activist and Raijor Dal chief, singled out Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) as “communal”, Aminul Islam, the general secretary of the AIUDF said that the points Gogoi has said aligns with what the BJP is saying.

“Akhil Gogoi’s letter forces us to raise questions as to whether it was dictated by ‘someone else’ — because the points he has said aligns with what the BJP is saying. At a time when a solid anti-BJP current is building up in Assam, Akhil Gogoi choses to put pressure on the Congress to break the grand alliance against the BJP,” Indian Express quoted as Islam saying.

The AIUDF leader challenged Gogoi to show where AIUDF has made any communal statement.

“Our stand on the Assam Accord, on the ‘foreigners issue’, the NRC and the CAA are the same as his and his party’s. Where have we ever made any communal statement?” he said.

AIUDF’s ally Congress also dismissed the allegations and asked what ‘communal’ act the AIUDF had done so far.

“We do not think the AIUDF is communal. When you try to work to uplift a downtrodden community without affecting any other community, then how can you be communal?” Pradyut Bordoloi senior Congress leader and parliamentarian said to Indian Express.

Assam’s prominent public intellectual and chief advisor of the Gogoi’s party, Hiren Gohain, quit his party position saying that Gogoi’s stance went completely opposite to his long-held opinion.

Gogoi’s statement on the AIUDF, led by Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal, is “unrealistic, misleading and harmful for the state,” Gohain told reporters.

Gogoi’s letter said that his party Raijor Dal would not join the Congress-led Grand Alliance till the Ajmal-headed party is there, as “we believe that the AIUDF is also a communal force and complements the BJP on many issues”.

“We do not desire to take along a communal party with fundamentalist ideology to oppose a communal and fascist party,” he wrote about AIUDF.

MP and Islamic scholar Badruddin Ajmal leads the AIUDF, which enjoys a large support base in Assam’s Bengali-origin Muslim community. The BJP has constantly attacked Ajmal, the AIUDF and Bengali origin Muslims in the state. It has also criticised the grand old party for tying up with the AIUDF.

The Congress — with the AIUDF, three Left parties, new regional party AGM and the Bodoland People’s Front — have announced a grand alliance against the BJP.
