Police probe Namaz offered in UP hospital, finds ‘no crime’

After a Muslim woman offering namaz at a Prayagraj hospital was filmed by some unknown people, police who initiated a probe said that no crime was committed.

The Prayagraj Police initially said a probe is on. “Cognizance of the video has been taken, and the concerned has been directed to take necessary action as per rules,” they said.

Following the campaign against the UP Police and its Islamophobic actions, the Prayagraj Police tweeted: “Inquiry found that the woman in the video was offering namaz without any wrong intentions, and without obstructing any work or traffic, for quick recovery of the patient. This act does not fall into any category of crime.”

However, hospital authorities have said the Muslim woman has been “warned against such activity.”

Dr MK Akhauri, Chief Medical Superintendent at the Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, said, “We have issued a strict warning against such activities in the ward. It is a public place.”

The Muslim woman was attending to a patient at the dengue ward. As she was offering prayers, a video was recorded without her consent and made viral on the internet.

Earlier responding to the incident, Asaduddin Owaisi MP tweeted: “If admitted to a hospital, taking care of their relatives, in some corner, without hurting anyone, if they pray according to their religion, then what is the crime in this? Does the UP Police have no other work? Wherever Namaz is offered, FIR is registered against them.”

This comes three weeks after the police in BJP ruling Uttar Pradesh have lodged an FIR against 25 Muslims in Moradabad after they offered namaz at a private space.
