Pregnant woman pushed off moving train in Tamil Nadu after resisting assault; accused arrested

In a shocking incident in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district, a 36-year-old pregnant woman was pushed out of a moving train after resisting an attempted sexual assault.

The accused, a 31-year-old man, was later arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP).

The woman, a native of Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, was living in Tiruppur with her husband and young son. A tailor by profession, she was four months pregnant and was traveling alone to visit her mother. She had boarded the Coimbatore-Tirupati Intercity Express on the night of February 6 when the accused, identified as Hemanth from Pooncholai village in Vellore, followed her to the restroom. When she resisted his advances and screamed for help, he allegedly pushed her out of the moving train near KV Kuppam.

Passengers immediately alerted railway authorities, leading to her rescue. She was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Vellore with fractures in her limbs and a head injury. Doctors have confirmed that her condition is stable, and she is expected to recover soon.

Investigations revealed that Hemanth has a history of violent crimes. He was out on conditional bail for the murder of a 29-year-old woman in Chennai in April 2024 and had a case against him from 2022 for pushing a commuter off a train after snatching her mobile phone. He has been detained under the Goondas Act twice before.

Following orders from the Superintendent of Police (GRP-Chennai), two special teams led by Katpadi Inspector Ruvanthika tracked him down to his native village and arrested him. A case has been registered against him, and further investigation is underway.
