Rajya Sabha Passes CAB

Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) gets through in Rajya Sabha after a long and intense discussion with 125 votes against 105 votes. The bill was introduced by Home minister Amit Shah. Even though BJP had less representation in the house, the support of AIDMK turned the table and favoured the Bill.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi calls it a ‘dark day’ in the constitutional history.

The controversial bill seeks to give citizenship to refugees from the Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zoroastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. The exclusion of Muslims, which leads to discrimination in law on religion is widely criticized as unconstitutional.

Assam and Tripura are facing internet shutdown to curb the widespread protest erupted against the Bill. Mass protests are planned by Muslim bodies across the nation.

Chairman of the house Venkaiah Naidu allocated 6 hours for the House to debate the bill. Congress-led Opposition alleged that the Bill is full of flaws and will attack the ‘Idea of India’.

The bill was passed in Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, on Monday with a majority of 311 votes against 80. The floor saw many interesting arguments prolonging the discussions until midnight.
