Report finds old number of former SC judge Justice Arun Mishra on Pegasus list

In a new revelation on Pegasus spyware, The Wire confirms the old number of former Supreme Court judge and sitting National Human Rights Commission chairman, Justice Arun Mishra, was among the leaked list of potential targets.

The report also says that the numbers of two officers from the Supreme Court Registry were entered into the list in 2019. The Wire states the details were confirmed by the individuals and Arun Mishra.

Arun Mishra told the publisher that the Rajasthan registered number was abandoned in 2014, while he was Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

The Pegasus Project, a collaboration of 80 journalists with the Technical lab of Amnesty International, 17 news organisations, coordinated by Forbidden Stories did an in-depth forensic analysis into the massive data leak of people spied by NSO Group for government clients.

The report uncovered ‘widespread, persistent and ongoing unlawful surveillance and human rights abuses’ using the Israeli company NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware. The Wire is the Indian media organisation working with the project.

Supreme Court Registry officials NK Gandhi and TI Rajput are the staffers feature on the list. A lawyer who works closely with former AG Mukul Rohatgi, and counsels for Christian Michel and Nirav Modi are also part of the snooping list.

Delhi-based lawyer, Aljo P. Joseph, who was added to the list in 2019, represents Christian Michel, the British ‘middleman’ extradited to India in December 2018 in connection with the Agusta Westland helicopter deal case.

The forensic examination of Joseph’s iPhone data is currently underway.
