RJD MP Manoj Jha, Jamia Coordination Committee demand immediate release of Meeran Haider

Delhi Police on Thursday arrested Meeran Haider, a Ph.D. scholar at Jamia Millia Islamia in a case related to anti-Muslim violence erupted by Hindu mobs in Northeast Delhi last month.

Haider was summoned on Wednesday evening for interrogation by the Special Cell at their office and was subsequently arrested.

The arrested student, Haider, is also the head of the Delhi youth wing of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Haider has been sent to 3-day police custody.

According to his friends, around 10 policemen had approached his local residence enquiring about him on Tuesday.

The Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), a group comprising students and alumni from the varsity, condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.

“The country is facing a massive health crisis, however, the state machinery is busy harassing and framing student activists in false cases to suppress voices of dissent,” they said.

The JCC said Haider was diligently working to provide ration to the needy during the lockdown.

“The JCC demands that he must be immediately released as all charges against him are baseless,” they said.

Rajya Sabha MP and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha tweeted, “Delhi Police called him for investigation and then received orders from above and arrested Meeran Haider, who has been helping people during the time of coronavirus outbreak.”

“Let us not stay silent against the Police witch hunt of dissent voices,” Aysha Renna, a student activist at Jamia Millia Islamia and a prominent face of students’ protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act tweeted.
