Rohith Vemula’s brother Raja Vemula and his wife Fathima Vemula have just been blessed with a baby boy today. The baby boy has been named ‘Rohith Vemula’.
Rohith Chakravarti Vemula was a PhD student and Dalit activist at the University of Hyderabad . Rohith was a student activist of the Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) who was institutionally murdered on 17 January 2016. He was among the five research scholars who were suspended by the Hyderabad University in August 2015. Rohith Vemula, a Dalit research scholar of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), hanged himself to death 15 days after he was expelled from his hostel along with four dalit students.
His death sparked protests and outrage from across India and gained widespread media attention as a discrimination against Dalits, in which brahmanical educational institutions have been seen as hotbeds of caste-based discrimination against students belonging to Dalit community.
