On Republic Day, Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula will join the protest at Shaheen Bagh, ongoing 24×7 sit-in by Muslim women to protest Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Making the announcement on Twitter, Radhika Vemula wrote, “Friends in Delhi, Join me at 12 pm on 26th January, as I stand with my valiant sisters, students & people of Shaheen Bagh who have become icons of resistance for our second Azaadi movement to defend the Constitution against fascist onslaught.”

Hundreds of women have been staging a sit-in in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh since December 15, 2019, to protest against CAA and NRC. The protest has inspired many similar demonstrations across the country including a demonstration at a park in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad, East Delhi’s Khureji Khas as well as Lucknow’s Ghantaghar.

“If CAA & NRC implemented, India will soon have (or become) the World’s largest Detention centres filled with its own people as Refugees,” Radhika Vemula who has become a symbol of resistance against BJP led government’s anti-Dalit and anti-Muslim policies, tweeted on January 8.

“No one, but Babasaheb Ambedkar and his Constitution, can save this country and its Democracy,” she added.

The iconic protest at Shaheen Bagh has been visited by missing JNU student Najeeb’s mother Fathima Nafees last week.
