SC to have special sitting to hear appeal against acquittal of GN Saibaba, 5 others

The Supreme Court will have a special sitting on Saturday at 11 am to hear the petition filed by the Maharashtra Government challenging the acquittal of Professor GN Saibaba and others in a UAPA Case.

It comes hours after the apex Court bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who mentioned the matter for urgent listing and stay of the verdict, that the court cannot stay the acquittal order as the parties are not before it.

The bench however permitted the State to seek urgent listing.

As per the Supreme Court website, the petition was filed at 3.59 pm and is indicated in the defect list.

A bench comprising Justice MR Shah and Bela M Trivedi to hear the matter.

The National Investigation Agency moved the Supreme Court after the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court Saibaba, and five others by setting aside the life imprisonment sentence awarded to them in 2017 by a sessions court in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli.
