Sharjeel Imam gets bail In sedition case, to remain in jail in UAPA cases

A Delhi Court on Friday granted bail to Muslim student activist Sharjeel Imam in a sedition case which accuses him of delivering a “provocative speech” against Citizesnship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019.

However, Imam will continue to remain in custody as he is yet to get bail in UAPA cases pending against him.

The bail has been granted to Imam in FIR 242/2019 registered at the NFC Police station, according to Live Law. City police accused that Imam’s speech led to massive protest in the Jamia Nagar area in 2019.

He has remained in custody for more than two and half years in the FIR.

In the same case, Imam was denied regular bail by a Saket Court in October 2021, saying that the tone and tenor of his ‘incendiary speech’ had a debilitating effect upon public tranquility, peace and harmony of the society.
