Vidhu Vincent, the first woman to win Kerala state award for best director

Vidhu Vincent, director of Manhole has been selected as the Best Director of 2016 in the Kerala State Film Awards announced here on Tuesday. Manhole, which revolves around a section of people disowned by the society, won the award for the Best Movie of 2016. It must be noted that Vidhu Vincent is the first woman to win Kerala State Film Award for Best Director.

Vidhu also won the Silver Crow Pheasant Award for best debut director at at the 21st edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). As Manhole enters the International Competition category of 21st IFFK 2016, Ms. Vincent – a journalist by profession – became the first woman from Kerala to to enter the competition category. Manhole is heavily inspired by the story of Ravi Kumar -whom Vidhu refers to as Raviettan, an auto driver- whose parents and grandparents were manual scavengers.
