Intensifying its probe into the sensational gold smuggling case using diplomatic channels, the Customs has sent a notice to a right-wing journalist and Kerala BJP mouthpiece Janam TV’s coordinating editor Anil Nambiar.

Nambiar was asked to appear before Customs at its office in Kochi on 27 August, as per the notice.

Earlier, Call Data Record(CDR) showed how Nambiar had contacted Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair, the two key suspects in the gold smuggling case, on 5 July – the day when Customs intercepted the gold baggage and more significantly, the day that the duo disappeared from Thiruvananthapuram.

Sources said NIA also picked up data on Swapna Suresh’s return calls to Nambiar.

Nambiar who was widely criticized for spreading Islamophobia and hatred against CPI (M) and Congress through TV debates hosts the prime-time show on Janam TV.

Janam TV channel is known for its proximity to the Sangh Parivar.

In his FB post on 15 July, Anil Nambiar maintained that his call to Swapna came after the gold smuggling news broke on media. He had said the call was intended to gather further details on the episode for news purposes.

On 5 July, gold weighing 30 kg concealed in imported plumbing material was seized by the Customs officials upon inspection of an air cargo consignment addressed to the Consular General of the United Arab Emirates in Thiruvananthapuram.

Several people, including key accused Swapna Suresh,Sandeep Nair and Sarith P S were arrested by the agencies including NIA, Customs and Enforcement Directorate probing the case.
