“Weighed just 20 Kg”: Kerala woman starved to death over dowry

27-year-old Tushara, Kerala woman in Karunagappally was allegedly starved to death by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry.

For days, she survived only on soaked rice and sugar syrup and weighed only 20 kg when she died last week, the police said on Friday.

Marks on her body during autopsy also indicated that she was being tortured.

The police on Friday arrested the victim’s husband Chanthu Lal (30) and his mother Geetha (55). The duo have been remanded to judicial custody.

The victim’s two children are currently under the protection of Childline Kollam.

“She looked like a bag of bones. A detailed inquiry has thrown light on the cruelty she was subjected to. Her relatives alleged that she was tortured for dowry,” a police official told news agency PTI.

“There was not an ounce of flesh on her when she passed away. The doctor who performed the postmortem also confirmed that there were marks on her body which suggested that she was attacked by her husband and in-laws,” Sub-Inspector of Pooyapalli police station told The News Minute
