Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday announced that cases registered against anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters and those booked for violation of the coronavirus lockdown norms are dropped.
Around 1,500 cases were registered against those involved in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed in the Lok Sabha on December 4 and Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019.
“Centre passed Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 in Lok Sabha & it was passed in State Legislatures later to amend Citizenship Act, 1955. Following this, members of some organisations protested in various parts of the state. About 1,500 cases were registered during protests,” ANI quoted Palaniswami as saying.
“I would like to inform you that all cases other than those registered for crimes including damage to public property, obstruction of police personnel and violence are dropped,” the AIDMK leader added.
Around 10 lakh cases had been registered against those who violated the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939, and the Epidemic Diseases, 1937, during the lockdown from March 25 last year.
The CM further stated that all other cases will be withdrawn except those involving violence during the period when coronavirus lockdown was in effect, obtaining an e-pass illegally, and preventing the police from working.
The CM made the announcement while campaigning at Kadayanallur in Tenkasi district.
