Tamil Nadu: EC debars DMK’s A Raja from campaigning for 48 hours

In Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission has reprimanded DMK leader A Raja for violation of model code of conduct, delists his name from list of star campaigner of DMK and debars him from campaigning for 48 hours with immediate effect upon not finding his reply regarding his remarks over Tamil Nadu CM and his mother, satisfactory.

The state’s ruling AIADMK had asked the election body to ban him from the campaign over his comments disparaging the CM.

“A Raja’s speech not only derogatory but also obscene and lower the dignity of the motherhood of women, which is a serious violation of the poll code,” said the Election Commission.

Tamil Nadu chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo sent a report to the commission while the Central Crime Branch had registered a case against the former Union minister under sections of the IPC and the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Raja submitted an interim reply on Wednesday denying the allegations and asked for a copy of full text of his abusive speech, copy of the complaint preferred by the AIADMK and requested an opportunity to give a detailed reply and personal hearing with an advocate.
