Tamil Nadu: ‘Hindus only’ job ad for college cause uproars

A walk-in interview call only for Hindus by a state government body, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE), for various teaching and non teaching staffs for Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Arts and Science College in Tamil Nadu’s Kolathur has invited criticism and uproar.

On 13 October, various publications had carried the HR&CE advertisement, which clearly stated that the posts are exclusively for Hindus.

The HR&CE department is opening four new arts and science colleges, including Kapaleeswarar College in Kolathur this academic year. The advertisement invited application for teaching faculties for various departments, and non teaching staffs like office assistant, watchman and sweeper, which were also exclusively for Hindus.

Teacher associations in the state said denying opportunities on the basis of religion is against the Constitution.

“This is the first time that such an advertisement has appeared stating that posts are reserved for Hindus only,” K. Pandyan, former president of Association of University teachers told IANS news agency.

Reminding that the HR&CE department is government run and candidates cannot be discriminated on the basis of religion, Pandyan cited the example of Muslim Service Society Wakf Board College in Madurai which employs several non-Muslim faculty members.

T Veeramani, president of Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Teachers Association also said the condition that only Hindus can apply was not acceptable.

“The government can run the institution only according to the Constitution. Even if one goes to court tomorrow, this condition will be struck down. We are bringing this to the attention of the Chief Minister,” Veeramani added.
