Tamil Nadu rains: Red alert in 4 districts; three dead

Chennai has been witnessing extremely heavy rainfall which has resulted in severe waterlogging and at least three people were killed due to electrocution in the state capital on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, and Chinglepet.

As per the 8 pm rainfall data released by the IMD, MRC Nagar (Chennai dist) recorded 198 mm of rainfall while Nungambakkam received 159.5 mm. The rains also triggered traffic snarls at major points in the city.

Those who died are 70-year-old Tamilarasi from Otteri area, a 13-year-old-boy in Mylapore, and a 45-year-old-women – a UP native in Puliyanthope area of Chennai, according to India Today.

Chennai Metro has extended its service timings by one hour from 11:00 pm to 12:00 am on Thursday.

Many residents in Chennai with the hashtag #ChennaiRains Thursday took to social media and shared pictures and videos to express their happiness on the sudden burst of rains.
