Tamil Nadu: RSS man arrested for harassing nuns

A member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Ganesh Babu, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly harassing two Christian nuns in Illuppur Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu, accusing them of forced conversion.

Babu and others snatched the nuns’ mobile phones and a two-wheeler. He was accompanied by 20 to 30 men, police said, according to The News Minute.

Following the arrest, Hindutva groups in Illuppur protested demanding that Ganesh be released.

The incident occurred on 21 January.

Babu was produced before a magistrate on Sunday and has been lodged in the Aranthangi sub-jail, TNM reported.

In Tamil Nadu, The death of 17-year-old Thanjavur student Lavanya last month has sparked accusations of forced conversion.

A case has been registered under sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 294(b) (obscenity), 387 (extortion) of the IPC and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

The incident comes amid growing attacks on Christians in India.
