Tensions flared in Telangana’s Jinnaram village of Sangareddy district after Hindutva groups attacked a madrasa, assaulted students, and tried to set fire to a nearby dargah, blaming madrasa students for vandalising two Shiva idols at a local temple.
However, CCTV footage later revealed that the damage had been caused by monkeys.
“We examined the CCTV footage and found a group of monkeys came to the site and damaged the idol,” said V. Satyanarayana, IG Multizone.
A mob shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans attacked the Madrasa Arabia Taleem Ul Quran in Jinnaram village, which houses around 80 students, and attempted to vandalise the premises.
During the assault, teachers and students were physically attacked, abused, and threatened with further harm.
After police intervened and dispersed the crowd, the mob moved towards a nearby shrine of Hazrat Gharib Shah Wali, where they set parts of the dargah on fire and desecrated the chadar laid at the shrine.
Following the incident, a heavy police deployment was made in the Islampur area of Jinnaram Mandal.
The madrasa authorities and local community strongly condemned the incident, demanding action from the District Superintendent of Police.
Meanwhile, Muslims from the surrounding areas protested against the attack.
A delegation of Muslim leaders from the ruling Congress party in Telangana, led by Mohammed Faheem Qureshi, submitted a formal complaint to DGP Dr. Jitender, demanding strict action against the culprits under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“Violence against any community is unacceptable,” said Mohammed Faheem Qureshi, the president of the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society (TMREIS).
AIMIM MLA Kausar Mohiuddin, along with members of the Muslim community from Jinnaram, met with Sangareddy District Superintendent of Police, Mr. Paritosh Pankaj, I.P.S., and demanded strict action against the culprits.
Separate complaints have been filed by the Masjid Committee, Madrasa Management, and Dargah Committee pertaining to the attacks on their respective institutions.
The Sangareddy police have filed cases related to the violence and have identified individuals responsible for spreading rumors and inciting the mob to attack religious institutions.
Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan alleged that despite the incident occurring 24 hours ago, no arrests have been made by the Sangareddy District Police.
Similarly, in February, BJP workers staged a protest in Hyderabad after a piece of meat was found inside a Hanuman temple, but CCTV footage later revealed that a cat carrying the meat had accidentally entered the temple.
Sangareddy district in Telangana has experienced recurring communal tensions over the years.
On January 22, 2024, a Hindutva mob in Doulatabad village of Sangareddy celebrated the Ram temple event by burning down a Muslim man’s shop, playing loud music, and chanting anti-Muslim slogans outside a mosque.
