A second-year post-graduate medical student, also a doctor, was arrested on Friday in connection with the suicide attempt by a tribal woman medico whom he had allegedly harassed.

Dr. M.A Saif was booked for “harassing” Dr. Preethi, his junior, and arrested two days after she attempted suicide in Warangal district of Telangana, police said to news agency PTI.

Preethi was found unconscious in the staff room of MGM Hospital while on duty in the early hours of Wednesday.

The condition of the first-year post-graduate student, who is undergoing treatment at the state-run Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) continued to be critical, doctors said.

The woman had attempted suicide at a state-run hospital in Warangal on Wednesday reportedly after being harassed by Saif.

The woman’s father has lodged a complaint with police accusing Saif of harassing his daughter and accordingly a case was registered, police said.

The man had been making comments to belittle her and harass her, it was alleged.

Health Minister T Harish Rao on Thursday assured the best treatment for Preethi at the NIMS and said that a full investigation would be followed by stringent action against the culprits.
