Heatwave is likely to abate over Delhi and adjoining parts of northwest and central India from Monday, the weather office has said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted partly cloudy sky with the possibility of thunder development at isolated places over Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, east Rajasthan and parts of Uttar Pradesh from Monday, which is likely to give some respite to residents from the scorching heat.

The heatwave would abate over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and West Rajasthan from Tuesday, according to the IMD.

Many parts of the country have been experiencing record-high temperatures for the past two months. Owing to scanty rains, northwest and central India experienced the hottest April in 122 years with average maximum temperature touching 35.9 degrees Celsius and 37.78 degrees Celsius, respectively.

This April, 146 instances of heatwave or severe heatwave took place in the country, the highest number since 2010, according to Indian Express.

The extreme heat is impacting hundreds of millions of people in one of the most densely populated parts of the world, threatening to damage whole ecosystems, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Friday.

Extreme heat has multiple and cascading impacts not just on human health, but also on ecosystems, agriculture, water and energy supplies and key sectors of the economy, WMO said.

WMO reiterated its commitment to “ensuring that multi-hazard early warning services reach the most vulnerable.”
