Three killed, including child after man sets fire inside moving train in Kerala

Three people were killed and many suffered burn injuries after an unidentified person poured inflammable oil on co-passengers and set them afire inside the the Alapuzha-Kannur Express around 9.50 pm on Sunday.

Three bodies, including that of a child, were later recovered from the railway tracks as police suspect that they may have jumped out of the moving train in panic. Two of the deceased have been identified as Toufiq and Rehana.

The incident occurred between Elathur and Koyilandi railway stations.the police said.

As per the account of a witness, a man in his thirties alighted from a train that had halted on a bridge over the Korapuzha river and immediately made his escape on a waiting bike.

One of the injured also informed the authorities that an unknown person produced a bottle containing a flammable substance, sprayed it on fellow passengers, and quickly set it alight before making a quick getaway.

The cops recovered a bag from the tracks that had another bottle of petrol and two mobile phones.

The train passengers said on Sunday that the assailant is a red shirt and black plant-clad lean man.

The police had earlier released the CCTV footage of the suspect. The footage shows a youngster wearing a red shirt and pants walking through a bylane and waiting near the main road.

There is also the visual of him getting on a bike and leaving the premise.

State police chief Anil Kanth said that the incident will be investigated by a special team. The Home Department and the national investigative agencies, along with the Railways, have asked the state for details on the incident.
