The Social Reform Committee of All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Sunday has launched a campaign to “make marriages simple, easy and prevent unnecessary ceremonies and customs, especially demands of dowry, oppression on daughters and daughters-in-law.”
This comes following the tragic incident of Gujarat woman Ayesha Banu’s death. On 25 February, Ayesha Banu, 24, a resident of Ahmedabad, recorded a video message before she jumped into the Sabarmati river and ended her life. Ayesha said she was facing harassment for dowry from her husband.
Maulana Umrain Mahfuz Rahmani, secretary of the Board will be heading the campaign.
“This Campaign has been started in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka by holding meetings with scholars and social workers of these states. The campaign will start in other states too in a few days, insha’Allah,” read a tweet from AIMPLB’s handle.
The Board also said that it has been decided where there is a forced dealing of dowry in a marriage, Ulama and Qazis would not participate in that marriage.
“This initiative is necessary for the protection of the daughters,” it added.
