Trinamool leader Saayoni Ghosh arrested on ‘imaginary charges’ in Tripura, alleges TMC

Actor turned politician and Trinamool Youth Congress President Saayoni Ghosh was arrested by Tripura Police on Sunday on attempt to murder charges, days ahead of civic polls in the northeast state.

Actor turned politician and Trinamool Youth Congress President Saayoni Ghosh was arrested by Tripura Police on Sunday on attempt to murder charges, days ahead of civic polls in the northeast state. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker filed a complaint that Saayoni Ghosh allegedly “disturbed” a street corner meeting of chief minister Biplab Deb on Saturday night.

Ghosh will be produced in court on Monday. Trinamool Congress is expected to move for bail soon after.

TMC leader’s arrest comes a day ahead of party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s roadshow on Monday in state capital Agartala.  Several TMC leaders, including Kunal Ghosh and Sushmita Dev, are in the Tripura capital for the election campaign.

“She has been arrested based on preliminary evidence. We’ve registered a case under sections 307, 153 of IPC,” BJ Reddy, Additional SP (Urban), West Tripura, said to ANI news agency.

A tweet by Saayoni Ghosh showed she was crossing a BJP meeting in her car, where Tripura chief minister and BJP leader Biplab Deb was delivering a speech. When a person recognized her, she said: “Khela hobe.

Ghosh’s party has alleged BJP workers had attacked a police station where she was being interrogated earlier in the day. TMC leaders were at the police station then. TMC’s state leader Subal Bhowmik said four to five party workers and some cops were injured and his car was damaged in the attack. He said a stone pelted by the assailants hit him on the back.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said the attack and Saayoni’s arrest were pre-planned to spoil Banerjee’s roadshow.

“The officer-in-charge of the police station had visited the hotel where Saayoni is staying and asked her to report to the police station for questioning. We had asked for the reasons. We said no notice was served on her. The officer could not give any answer,” New Indian Express quotes Kunal Ghosh as saying.

“The police levelled some baseless and imaginary charges against her. The BJP is going to lose the civic polls and that’s why, they are doing all these things,” Kunal said.
