A local court in Aligarh on Wednesday acquitted three Hindu nationalists including former Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) office-bearer Vinay Varshney in the murder case of Mohammad Tariq Munawwar, who was killed during protests against CAA in Aligarh in February 2020.

Tariq, 22-year-old Muslim youth, was standing on the terrace of his house, when a stray bullet fired during the violence against CAA protesters by both cops and Hindutva groups, hit him in the stomach. This happened on 23 February. Tariq was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment and later his condition started deteriorating and he breathed his last on 12 March.
Tariq’s family had named Vinay in the FIR, accusing him of firing the bullet.
The saffron party leader was in jail last two years. The BJP leader Vinay was arrested on charges of attempt to murder and after Tariq’s death, the charge was later changed to murder.
Police had recovered the weapon which was used for the crime and it was registered in Vinay’s name, according to the earlier reports.
Last year, the Aligarh court framed charges against the trio and sent them to judicial custody in Etah jail.
