Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) members forcibly stopped an interfaith couple who had turned up to register their marriage at the Moradabad district court on Monday.

The Hindutva men accosted the couple outside the collectorate compound and accused the Muslim man of love jihad. The couple were handed over to the police while the Vahini members who raised Jai Shri Ram murder cries.

A day after Hindu Yuva Vahini militants targeted them, police on Tuesday filed an FIR against the Muslim man under the anti-conversion law and on charges of allegedly kidnapping the woman from Ludhiana.

The police didn’t take any action against the assailants.

“Our members got to know that a resident of Katghar area was trying to register his marriage with a Hindu woman in a Moradabad court on Monday. We informed the police and intercepted the couple… This is nothing but love jihad…” Ankit Sharma, Moradabad unit chief of the Vahini, said to Indian Express.

“We have lodged an FIR against the man under IPC sections 363 (punishment for kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) and sections 3-5 of the UP Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. The man has been allowed to live with his family while we are investigating the case, and the woman has been handed over to her family. We will take suitable legal action once our inquiry is completed,” Indian Express quotes Sagar Jain, Deputy SP, Civil Lines, Moradabad, as saying.

“The couple were trying to register their marriage in the court. We got to know that they belong to different religions and informed the woman’s parents and also the Ludhiana police since a missing complaint had been lodged at a police station there by her family,” Jain adds.

‘Love jihad’ is a term used by the Hindu nationalist groups to describe an alleged phenomenon where Muslim men lure Hindu women, by hook or by crook, into marrying them and converting to Islam. Hindu group propagandists claim that this is an organised racket rooted in a widespread conspiracy. However, successive probes have failed to find any evidence that such a conspiracy exists and the even Union government has admitted that the term has no credible definition.
