UP: Journalist arrested after he questions minister over development work

The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal arrested a journalist, Sanjay Rana, who runs a news channel on YouTube, Sunday after he questioned Minister of State (Independent) for Secondary Education, Gulab Devi, over development work in her constituency.

The arrest comes after a local BJP leader filed a complaint against the journalist alleging that he interfered in government work during the state minister’s programme and assaulted and threatened to kill him.

On 11 March 11, minister Gulab Devi attended the check dam foundation stone laying ceremony in Budhnagar Khandwa village of the district. During the programme, Sanjay Rana asked her many questions related to the lack of implementation of the promises that she made during the Assembly polls.

The video of the interaction between Rana and the minister, went viral on social media. In the video, locals can be heard supporting the scribe and complaining about the status of developmental work.

The UP Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested the journalist under section 151 of CrPC.

The journalist was arrested and released later, said Satendra Pawar, SHO, Chandausi.
