A journalist who was arrested after he alleged EVMs were being replaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, has accused the police of torturing him in custody.

Gaurav Bansal, 39, was arrested on 15 March on charges of misbehaving with police officers outside a counting centre in Agra. Bansal was booked after he reached a counting centre on 8 March and alleged EVMs were being replaced.

“He was given third degree torture and humiliated by police officers. They beat him up mercilessly all night,” Bansal’s lawyer Adhar Sharma said.

A video showing Gaurav Bansal in a shaky condition is in circulation.

The scribe reportedly works for Hindi daily Punjab Kesri.

Agra journalists have decided to stage a dharna on 19 March at the Shahid Smarak.

Several delegations including journalists and rights activists have met the senior administrative and police officials to secure release of Gaurav Bansal.
