A man was killed and his associates injured in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district on suspicion of cow smuggling, after they allegedly rammed their pickup van into a head constable. Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh, who sustained serious injuries, died during treatment.
The deceased suspected cow smuggler has been identified as Salman, a resident of Jaunpur, while his associates Narendra Yadav and Golu Yadav are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to police, three others — Rahul Yadav, Raju Yadav, and Azad Yadav — managed to flee the scene.
According to the police, the same gang had allegedly rammed their vehicle into Parauganj police outpost in-charge, Sub-Inspector Pratima Singh, on the night of May 14 with the intent to kill her.
Singh sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Varanasi. Following the incident, a vehicle-checking drive was launched to trace the pickup van involved in the attack.
According to Jaunpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kaustubh, on Saturday evening, a team stationed at the Khujji crossing signaled a pickup vehicle en route to Varanasi to stop. Instead, the vehicle sped up and hit Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh, who was attempting to intercept it. Singh was rushed to a hospital in Varanasi, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
He further stated that the team pursued the suspects and located the abandoned pickup truck in Tala Bela village, Varanasi district.
Later, officials received intelligence that the assailants were heading back to Jaunpur on two motorcycles.
The suspects were traced to the Chandwak area of Jaunpur, where they allegedly opened fire at the police team when signaled to stop.
The police fired back in “self-defense” during the exchange of fire, resulting in Salman being shot in the chest and Narendra Yadav and Golu Yadav sustaining injuries, according to the Superintendent of Police.
