UP: Muslim vegetable vendor died after being beaten by police, murder charges against cops

Three policemen in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao were charged with murder after a Muslim vegetable vendor Faisal Hussain (18) was allegedly killed in police custody on Friday.

Following the protests by family and locals, the murder case has been registered against two police constables Vijay Chaudhary and Seemavat and home guard Satyaprakash. Sources also say Satyaprakash has been dismissed from the service while constables Chaudhary and Seemavat were suspended by higher officials.

“All three were already suspended soon after the incident. It was lodged based on the complaint from family,” Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shashi Shekhar Singh said.

However Unnao Police told reporters that Hussain prima facie died of heart attack, was picked for curfew violation.

“At 2PM on Friday, Faisal was selling vegetables on a handcart outside his house near the Sabzi Mandi. Then the policeman at the outpost arrived. Faisal and other shopkeepers tried to ran away after seeing the police. But the police caught him and ruthlessly beat him on a bike and took him to Kotwali. Faisal’s condition suddenly worsened in Kotwali. The doctor declared him dead after bringing him to Community Health Center. The family has accused the police of beating Faisal to death,” Irfan, a local journalist told Maktoob.

The brother of Faisal told reporters that his brother was killed by cops inside the Bangar Mau police station.

Following the tragic death of Faisal, a large number of locals blocked the dead body at the Lucknow intersection of Unnao-Hardoi Marg.

Locals, agitated by the police action, are demanding action against the culprits, compensation and government jobs to the victim’s family.
