At least 34 people have died due to incessant rains in Uttarakhand, out of which maximum casualties are from the Nainital district.
Five persons are still missing.
Eleven deaths were reported today; seven people died after house collapse incidents in the Mukteshwar and Khairna areas of Nainital and one person was swept away in Udham Singh Nagar.
Picturesque Nainital was cut off after all three access roads were blocked by landslides. According to ANI news agency, roads to Kaladhungi, Haldwani and Bhawali have also been closed by debris from landslides.
Images and videos of the floods in Nainital circulated on social media show frightening scenes.
The iconic Nainital lake has overflowed after more than 500mm of rain in 24 hours meant water levels surged to a record high. The famous Mall Road and Naina Devi temple have been flooded.
The NDRF has deployed 15 rescue teams to evacuate people from flood-hit areas. The rescue teams have evacuated more than 300 stranded people from Udham Singh Nagar district and other flood-affected areas.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is also carrying out relief and rescue operations by deploying three Dhruv helicopters at Pantnagar.
CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.
Those who lost their houses will be given Rs 1.9 lakhs, the CM announced.
According to the State Disaster Management Secretary, Uttarakhand has recorded more than 200mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami over phone and took cognizance of the damage caused by the rainfall and discussed the relief and rescue work.
