Victory against injustice: Rahul Gandhi on PM’s announcement to repeal farm laws

The country’s ‘annadatas’ have made “arrogance bow its head” through ’satyagraha’, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Friday and described the Union’s decision to repeal the farm laws as a “victory against injustice”.

“Country’s ‘annadatas’ (food providers) have made arrogance bow its head through satyagraha,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

His remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the nation this morning, announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws, which were at the centre of protests by farmers for the past year.

“Congratulations on this victory against injustice!” Gandhi said. ‘Jai Hind, Jai Hind ka Kisan’,” he added.

Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other states have been camping at Delhi’s borders since November 2020 in protest against the three legislations, the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020.

“We worked to provide farmers with seeds at reasonable rates and facilities like micro-irrigation, 22 crore soil health cards. Such factors have contributed to increased agricultural production. However, we failed to make them understand about the benefits of the new laws and as such, we have decided to roll them back,” in an address to the nation on Guru Nanak Jayanti, PM Modi said.

Two weeks from today, November 26, would have marked a year of farmers besieging Delhi demanding to strike down the three laws.

Over 800 farmers have lost their lives during the protest.

Farmers protest in the borders of Delhi was, at times, lauded as the largest protest gathering in human history.

‘Welcome. Protest not just about farm laws. Will announce future of protests soon’: Farmers’ body

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of protesting farmers, while welcoming the repeal of the three contentious farm laws, reminded Prime Minister Narendra Modi that their protests were not limited to this one issue.

“Samyukt Kisan Morcha welcomes this decision and will wait for the announcement to take effect through due parliamentary procedures,” an umbrella body of 40 farm unions, said.

“SKM also reminds the Prime Minister that the agitation of farmers is not just for the repeal of the three black laws, but also for a statutory guarantee of remunerative prices for all agricultural produce and for all farmers. This important demand of farmers is still pending. So also is the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill. SKM will take note of all developments, hold its meeting soon and announce further decisions,” the farmers’ body said in a statement.
