During the ‘Navkar Mahamantra Divas’ program, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said the Waqf (Amendment) Act will not be implemented in the state and assured that she will protect the rights of minority people and their property.
“I want to tell the people from the minority community that I know you are pained by the Waqf property issue, but have faith that there will be no divide and rule in Bengal,” she said, addressing a programme of the Jain community in Kolkata.
Referring to the violence over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad on Tuesday, she said, “See the situation in the bordering areas of Bangladesh. This (Waqf Bill) should not have been passed now. We have 33 percent minorities in Bengal. What will I do with them?”
She also appealed to the people to remain cautious and not be swayed by individuals trying to provoke them into launching a political movement: “We should give the message of live and let live… It is our work to give protection to those who are living in Bengal.”
“I appeal to you all that if anyone provokes you politically to assemble, then please don’t do it. Please remember that Didi will protect you and your property. If we stay together, then we can conquer the world.”
Alleging Banerjee of “religious appeasement,” BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said, “No, the Waqf law is a federal law, and in this country’s federal structure, any law made by Parliament is binding on all states. So, this is not a matter of choice or personal will. Mamata Banerjee is deliberately trying to mislead people and engage in religious appeasement. Mamata Ji knows that implementing this law is a constitutional obligation for her…”
