“War is not in anyone’s interest,” says Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, demands protection for civilians in border areas

Syed Sadatullah Husaini, President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, has expressed serious concern over the continued tension, shelling, and attacks between India and Pakistan, stating that “war and strife are not in anyone’s interest.”

In a statement, Husaini welcomed the Indian government’s repeated assertions that it does not intend to escalate the conflict and expressed hope for concrete progress toward lasting peace.

He emphasised that both India and Pakistan are grappling with poverty and deprivation while striving for the prosperity and progress of their people.

Pointing out that both nations are nuclear powers, he warned that war and unrest would serve no one’s interest and would most severely harm the poor populations of both countries. He urged the political and military leadership of both sides to take swift and concrete steps toward sustainable peace.

Referring to reports of civilian casualties in Indian border areas, Husaini stressed that the threats faced by innocent civilians demand urgent attention. He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and called on the government to prioritise providing them with necessary assistance and protection.

At least 16 civilians including 4 children were killed in the shelling by Pakistan. One soldier was also killed.

“According to media reports, several civilians have also been killed on the other side of the border. The killing of innocent civilians – especially women and children – regardless of their race, religion, language, nationality, or class, is deeply tragic. It is the collective responsibility of all parties to ensure, under all circumstances, the protection of innocent human lives,” he added.

He also acknowledged media reports of civilian deaths on the Pakistani side of the border, stating that the killing of innocent civilians—especially women and children—regardless of their identity, is deeply tragic. He underscored the collective responsibility of all parties to ensure the protection of innocent human lives in all circumstances.

Highlighting terrorism as a grave issue in the region, Husaini noted that both India and Pakistan have suffered heavy civilian losses. “Now is the time to rise above narrow interests and focus on finding a lasting solution to this core issue,” he said.

The Indian army has said that Pakistan’s armed forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other weapons along India’s western border on Thursday night and Friday morning.

No casualties were reported.

“Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025,” the military said in a post on X.

The army said Pakistan also “resorted to numerous ceasefire violations” along the Line of Control (LoC).

“The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the CFVs,” the Indian Army said.

“Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignity and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force,” the statement added.

The clashes follow escalating tension between the two nuclear-armed countries since a deadly attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which India blamed on Pakistan.
