Welfare Party chief Dr. S.Q.R Ilyas to contest from Bengal

Welfare Party of India national president Dr.Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.

Ilyas will contest from Murshidabad’s Jangipur seat, earlier held by former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee.

Worsening condition of electors of Murshidabad, predominantly Muslims, as the reason for contesting from Jangipur, JNU activist Umar Khalid’s father SQR Ilyas said.

Earlier, SQR Ilyas served as the convener of Babri Masjid Coordination Committee, member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board and general secretary of All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat.

“In this constituency the left had been in power for 34 years and before them the congress was there. Now the sitting MP of Jangipur is also from the Congress party. To say the fact, after independence, including Murshidabad this state was ruled by the CPI(M) and Congress party. Still, why this region is so lagged behind?”

The constituency has been a Congress bastion over the past 15 years, electing its then veteran leader Pranab Mukherjee in 2004 and 2009.

In Jangipur, which has about 65 per cent Muslim population, Ilyas’s fight is against Congress’s Abhijit Mukherjee, CPIM’s Zulfiqar Ali, BJP’s Mafuja Khatun and TMC candidate Khalilurrahman, a businessman who is contesting elections for the first time.

Jangipur Lok Sabha Constituency, formed prior to the 1967 elections comprises seven Assembly segments – Suti, Jangipur, Raghunathaganj, Sagardighi, Lalgola, Nabagram and Khargram and has over 16 lakh voters.

Jangipur goes to the hustings on April 23 in the third phase of the Lok Sabha polls.
