A 46-year-old woman, undergoing training to become a flight attendant, has submitted a police complaint alleging that she was sexually assaulted by a hospital staff member at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon while she was on ventilator support.
Originally from West Bengal, the woman had arrived in the city to attend a training session with a leading airline. During this program, she encountered an accident while swimming in a hotel pool, which resulted in a medical emergency. Her husband initially admitted her to a private hospital. On April 5, she was shifted to Medanta Hospital, where she received critical care for several days.
The alleged incident occurred on April 6, when she was in the Intensive Care Unit. As per her complaint, “On April 6, I was on a ventilator when some hospital staff sexually assaulted me.” The FIR mentions that she was in a semi-conscious condition, unable to resist or call for help. It also states, “She was not in a condition to speak or resist the man’s advances because of her weakened condition. There were two nurses in the room, but they did not intervene.”
After her discharge on April 13, the woman informed her husband about the incident. The complaint was filed the following day at the Sadar police station. Authorities registered an FIR under applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The woman’s statement has also been recorded in court before a magistrate.
Gurgaon police confirmed they are in the process of verifying the claim. “The victim’s statement has been recorded before the magistrate in court. The police team is examining the footage of the hospital’s CCTV cameras and will soon identify the accused,” a spokesperson said. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance video from the hospital to track down the alleged perpetrator.
Medanta Hospital has responded to the complaint with a public statement. “We have been made aware of a complaint from a patient and have been cooperating with the investigations conducted by relevant authorities. At this stage, no allegations have been substantiated, and all relevant documents, including CCTV footage from the hospital for the time period in question, have been handed over to the police. We remain committed to supporting the process of investigation,” the hospital stated.
The police have said that the investigation is active and that efforts are underway to locate and arrest the suspect.
