Women’s World Boxing Championships: India‘s Nitu Ghanghas, Saweety Boora become world champions

India’s Saweety Boora defeated Wang Lina of China in the 81kg category final, while Nitu Ghanghas outplayed Lutsaikhan Altansetseg of Mongolia in the summit clash of 48kg category.

Two-ztime World Youth champion Nitu Ghanghas has won the first of four finals India is in contention in at the 2023 World Boxing Championships.

The 22-year-old defeated two-time Asian Championships bronze medallist Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg of Mongolia 5-0 in the final on Saturday.

“I had decided to play aggressively today before the bout and I feel very happy (after the victory). I am proud of myself and my family and would like to thank my coaches, especially my head coach Bhaskar sir,” said Nitu after her bout.

Throughout the tournament, Nitu played some remarkable games. She had three consecutive Referee Stops Contest (RSC) wins under her belt in the competition.

She became the sixth Indian woman pugilist to win a gold in the history of the tournament, before Saweety became the seventh to do so.

Saweety Boora defeated Wang Lina of China in the 81kg category final to bag India’s second gold medal at the ongoing Women’s World Boxing Championships.

The Indian pugilist registered a 4-3 win. It was a neck-and-neck battle between Saweety and China’s Wang Lina, but the Indian star eventually beat the latter by a narrow margin.
