“2024 Semi-Final”: Nitish Kumar meets Arvind Kejriwal in bid to forge Opposition unity

Following a discussion with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, announced that his counterpart from Bihar would appeal to Opposition parties to collaborate in opposing the Narendra Modi government’s ordinance on the control of services in the national capital.

Expressing the need for a bill in the Rajya Sabha to nullify the Centre’s decision, which has the support of governments led by the Opposition, Kejriwal stated, “If this bill gets passed, then there will be no BJP in 2024.”

Kejriwal said, “Nitish ji today came to extend his support to me. He is with us and the people of Delhi. He also disagrees with the BJP’S ordinance and the injustice it has done to the elected government. Nitish ji will fight against this with us. He is getting all the Opposition to fight against the Union government”.

“If all the non-BJP state governments come together, they can bring this matter in Rajya Sabha via a Bill. If this Bill gets passed, then there will be no BJP in 2024… If the Union government’s decision gets defeated in the House, then it will be the semi-final of BJP in 2024,” he added.

The ordinance, promulgated by President Droupadi Murmu, effectively negates the May 11 Supreme Court verdict stating that the Delhi government has legislative power over bureaucrats excluding the departments of public order, police and land.

Kejriwal said that the ordinance was unconstitutional and a “direct challenge” to the Supreme Court.

“We will approach the Supreme Court against it. The Union introduced the ordinance on services matter just hours after the apex court has shut for vacation…I will also go to people, door to door, in Delhi and AAP will also take to the streets against the ordinance because it snatches powers of Delhi people,” Kejriwal said.
