In solidarity with wrestlers, Khap Panchayat gives call for India Gate candle march on May 23

India’s prominent grapplers including names like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and others are seeking action in the sexual harassment charges against Brij Bhushan.

The prolonged protest by top Indian wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over the harassment of women wrestlers is set to complete a month but their demands fell on deaf ears.

India’s prominent grapplers including names like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and others are seeking action in the sexual harassment charges against Brij Bhushan.

As their 15-day ultimatum to arrest the WFI President ended on Sunday, the Khap Panchayat in Haryana’s Rohtak will hold candle march at the India Gate on May 23 followed by another ‘maha panchayat’ on May 28.

In a video message, Olympian wrestler Sakshi Malik has appealed to citizens to join the candle march at India Gate. “On this occasion, we are organising a candle march at India Gate. Appeal to all of you to join our campaign,” she said.

Wrestlers said they will organise a ‘mahila maha panchayat outside the new Parliament building during its inauguration ceremony.

The decision was taken at a maha panchayat called Maham Chaubisi khap — a cluster of 24 villages — in Haryana’s Maham town in Rohtak district.

Women from Rohtak, Jhajjar, Narnaul, Faridabad, Rewari, Charkhi Dadri, and Gurugram districts of Haryana are likely to participate in the mahila mahapanchayat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Parliament building on 28 May-the birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar.

Farmer leader and national spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Rakesh Tikait said that just like the ‘Farmers Protest’, this protest will also go on for very long.

Meanwhile, wrestler icon Vinesh Phogat on Monday told the media, “I would like to tell Brij Bhushan that not only Vinesh, all the girls who have given the complaint, are ready to undergo the Narco test. It should be done live so that the entire country knows about his cruelty to the daughters of the country”.

Bhushan demanded a polygraph test, popularly known as a lie-detector test, of the wrestlers.
