In UP, a private school principal suspended after conducting Eid celebrations

The principal and two teachers of BLS International School in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras were suspended following a hate campaign by Hindutva supporters against the teachers and students who celebrated Eid inside the school.

The Hindutva group alleged that the students were asked to offer Namaz. Videos circulating on social media showed the Hindutva men chanting Hanuman Chalisa outside the main gate of the school.

The school vice-principal, Karnika Srivastava said that the they commemorated World Heritage Day and Eid ul Fitr, performing the song “lab pe aati hai dua”. However, this led to allegations by Hindutva group that the school had taught Namaz to the children.

The local administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter, and the school’s principal, Sonia McPherson, has been suspended. Archana Verma, the District Magistrate of Hathras, issued an order for an immediate inquiry into the matter. The school has denied all the allegations and stated that they were only celebrating World Heritage Day and Eid.

The school management released a statement saying, “A special assembly was organised on April 18. For the all-round development of the students, music, dance and drama skits were organised to make them aware of Indian festivals… The assembly was on the theme of World Heritage Day and Eid. Students enacted roles of Shivaji Maharaj, Fatima Sheikh, Symbol of Democracy, Cathedral Church, Taj Mahal, and Elephanta Caves to make everyone aware of the heritage and great personalities…they performed and sang… But some people tried to mislead by giving the name of this song as ‘Fatiha’ or ‘Namaz’ and spread false rumours. It is not at all the same… The school completely denies this. All this was done under a conspiracy by some people to tarnish the image of the school. Nothing like this had happened in the school.”

The protest was led by self-proclaimed Hindu leader Deepak Sharma.
