Odisha train accident: Only 108 bodies identified out of 275 dead, Govt continues identification process

Three days after a multi-train collision in Odisha’s Balasore district, state government on Sunday said only 108 bodies have been identified so far, and will be handed over to their relatives after due procedures.

The state government on Sunday revised the toll downwards from 288 to 275.

The Odisha government has posted lists and photographs of the dead as well as the injured undergoing treatment at various hospitals, on three websites to facilitate identification. The authorities have also set up a toll-free helpline and a control centre in Bhubaneswar.

The state government has set up two 24X7 toll-free numbers – 18003450061/ 1929 – to help those looking for their relatives. A control room has been set up at the BMC-ICOMC tower in Bhubaneswar to facilitate relatives and friends of the victims and injured.

On Sunday morning, more than 170 bodies were transported to Bhubaneswar, where they are currently being stored at the morgues of six hospitals in the city. This includes a total of 100 bodies being held at AIIMS, comprising both private and government healthcare facilities.

“After detailed verification and a report by the Balasore district administration, the final toll has been fixed at 275. Some bodies were counted twice,” Jena said, Indian Express reported.
