Payal Kapadia’s ‘All we imagine as light’ wins Grand Prix at Cannes 2024

Payal Kapadia’s “All we imagine as light”, featuring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon, has won the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

This prestigious award, second only to the Palme d’Or, marks a historic moment for Indian cinema.

The film, directed by Kapadia, debuted on May 23 in the festival’s acclaimed competition section, making it the first Indian film in 30 years to be featured in the main segment.

“All we imagine as light” celebrates the compelling story of Malayali nurses working in Mumbai, brought to life by its talented cast.

It was the first Indian film to feature in the festival’s main segment in 30 years. The last Indian movie to make it to competition section was Shaji N Karun’s Swaham in 1994.

Talking about All We Imagine As Light in an earlier interview with Maktoob, Kani Kusruti said, “When I get to know that our film was selected to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or award at Cannes, it wasn’t a moment of euphoric happiness. Instead, the news slowly sunk in, and we all genuinely felt very happy about it. The way we all worked together and the catharsis we felt when the film was finally complete was immensely fulfilling. Personally,I was excited at the prospect of watching the film and seeing how it turned out.”
