French forward Antoine Griezmann, one of France’s most iconic football stars left fans and the football world in shock after announcing his retirement from international football on Monday, at the age of 33.
The Atlético Madrid star made 137 appearances for his country, scoring 44 goals, and played an instrumental role in some of France’s most memorable recent successes, including winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation. Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.” Griezmann said in an emotional video posted on social media.
Griezmann’s international career highlights include being a standout performer during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he scored a crucial penalty in the final to help France secure a 4-2 victory over Croatia.
Additionally, he was the top scorer at Euro 2016 with six goals, despite France finishing runners-up to Portugal. He also contributed to France’s 2021 Nations League triumph and played a key role in their run to the 2022 World Cup final, where they were narrowly beaten by Argentina on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Having made his debut for France in 2014 under manager Didier Deschamps, Griezmann quickly became a key figure in the squad.
His 137 caps make him the third-most capped player in French history, behind only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram. He is also France’s fourth-highest goalscorer, with only Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry, and current captain Kylian Mbappé ahead of him.
Griezmann’s final appearance for France came earlier this month in a UEFA Nations League victory over Belgium.
His retirement follows a series of key exits from the French squad, including Lloris, Raphaël Varane, and Olivier Giroud, signaling the end of an era for the French national team.
